The Digital Technology curriculum for South Africa is piloted at some schools from 2021 and will be fully implemented by 2025. This curriculum for grade 4 to 9 includes block-based coding such as Scratch and MakeCode programming. 

 

Learners enjoy challenges to code animations and games and to use data from the sensors of the micro:bit for projects.

There are not enough trained teachers to offer programming. I am offering a free 24 week course via Zoom online sessions to help teachers to program and how this could be done in class.

Who should do this training?

  • Any teacher interested in programming and robotics
  • Teachers who will possibly be asked to teach programming to grades 4 to 9 in the near future or who are already teaching it.
  • No previous programming experience necessary.

  • A laptop or tablet with built-in camera, microphone and speakers or a computer with headset and webcam.

How will it work?

  • Recordings of the sessions will be available for teachers who order the books later in the year.
  • Each training session will deal with one chapter in one of the workbooks.
  • Teachers can send questions via email in advance that will be answered during the training session.
  • Various ways to solve each problem will be considered.
  • The engineering design cycle will be followed with a reflection on the learning process using De Bono’s thinking hats.

STEM education is the learning of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through an integrated approach; one that offers hands-on and relevant learning experiences.

Gaining skills of problem-solving with innovative thought to find creative solutions will be beneficial for anyone traversing the future job landscape.

Activities that provide exploratory learning to encourage critical thinking can be incorporated into everyday schooling, starting at a young age. 

The skill to communicate is vital to explain ideas to a group, negotiate agreements and cooperate in a group.

STEM literacy includes basic arithmetic, science principles, a foundational use of computers and applications and can include coding and electronics to build circuits for projects and robots. 

Robotics is an excellent way to integrate design, making, electronics, mechanics and coding. Excellent robot kits are available to use in class, or you can build your own at a fraction of the cost (and learn a lot by doing so)

STEM

STEM is ‘n beweging in die opvoedkunde om die feite wat in natuurwetenskappe, tegnologie en wiskunde geleer word,  prakties en geintegreerd aan te bied in relevante praktiese aktiwiteite.

Leerders wat innoverend kan optree in probleem situasies en met kreatiewe oplossings na vore kan kom, sal suksesvol wees in verskeie beroepe. 

Leerders kan selfs al voorskools blootgestel word aan situasies waar hulle vraagstellend en ondersoekend kan leer om krities te dink en ontdekkings te maak. Voeg daarby die vermoe om te kommunikeer sodat jy  jou idees aan ‘n groep kan oordra en hulle samewerking te kry, en jy het die resep vir ‘n wenner!

Almal het praktiese kennis van wiskunde en wetenskap en rekenaargeletterd nodig en kodering en elektronika as verryking stel jou in staat  om stroombane vir projekte en robotte te bou.

Om robotte te bou en beheer met kode integreer ontwerp, die maak van onderdele, elektronika, kennis van meganika en kodering in. Uitstekende robotte kan gekoop word om in die klas te gebruik, of jy kan jou eie robot self bou.
